EV, Hydrogen and CNG Vehicles May Get 5-Year Longer Life

The government is considering a major change that could benefit owners of electric, hydrogen and CNG vehicles. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has proposed extending the operational life of these cleaner vehicles by up to five years compared with petrol and diesel vehicles.
The proposal is part of a draft amendment to the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989. If approved, the move could particularly benefit commercial vehicle owners and fleet operators by allowing them to use their vehicles for longer and reduce replacement costs.

A longer operational life could also lower the overall cost of owning green vehicles and potentially improve their resale value. The proposal comes as the government continues to promote cleaner and alternative fuel technologies.
National Permit Process to Go Digital
The draft also proposes making the National Permit process fully digital for commercial vehicles operating across multiple states. Applications, approvals and other permit-related procedures could be handled online.
This could reduce paperwork, save time and help fleet operators get their vehicles on the road faster.
Auto Component Makers May Get Trade Certificates

The government has also proposed bringing auto component manufacturers under the Trade Certificate system. At present, these certificates are mainly issued to vehicle manufacturers and dealers.
The change could simplify the testing, transportation and validity-related processes for auto components. It may also support India’s growing automobile and auto-component manufacturing sector.
