Ola-Uber-Rapido to Face New Rules From Sept 1

Maharashtra is set to introduce new rules for app-based passenger transport services such as Ola, Uber and Rapido from September 1. The new regulations aim to tighten licensing, driver verification, safety and monitoring requirements.

Under the new rules, all ride-hailing aggregators will need a licence from the transport authority. Drivers will be required to have a valid driving licence, a mandatory badge and practical knowledge of Marathi.

Drivers applying for a badge must also submit a 15-year residence proof from Mumbai or the city where they wish to operate, along with a police verification report.

Drivers will not be allowed to operate vehicles for more than 12 hours continuously. They will also be entitled to receive at least 80% of the total fare collected.

GPS Tracking and Online Monitoring

App-based vehicles will be monitored through GPS, while drivers and vehicles will undergo online verification and surveillance by the transport department. Aggregator apps and websites will also be required to offer services in Marathi, Hindi and English.

Action Against Fake Documents

Strict action will be taken against drivers who obtain licences using forged documents. Their licences may be cancelled and legal proceedings could also be initiated.

The new regulations will apply to Ola, Uber, Rapido and other app-based passenger transport services operating in Maharashtra from September 1.
