BRICS Calls for Stronger Climate Cooperation

BRICS countries have reaffirmed their commitment to environmental protection, climate action and sustainable development, with a focus on the needs of developing nations.
Speaking at the 12th BRICS Environment Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said environmental policies must be people-centric, practical and aligned with the development priorities of the Global South.

He highlighted major global challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and increasing disaster risks. Yadav called for greater cooperation among BRICS nations in forest-fire prevention, early warning systems, emergency response and post-fire recovery.

The minister also stressed the need for greater climate finance, stronger adaptation measures and increased participation of local communities. He cited initiatives such as Mission LiFE and Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam as examples of combining environmental protection with public participation.
India identified four key priorities for its BRICS chairship: sustainable lifestyles, afforestation and forest-fire management, circular economy, and climate adaptation and disaster resilience.

The meeting concluded with the adoption of a Joint Ministerial Statement. BRICS nations called for stronger implementation of the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, the UN climate framework and the Paris Agreement.
The countries also stressed that greater international financial support from developed nations is essential to help developing countries tackle climate and environmental challenges while reducing poverty and promoting sustainable development.
