Odisha Transport dept announces strict action against vehicles operating without valid insurance

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Transport Department has warned strict action against vehicles operating without valid insurance, and pollution certificate in the state.

The Transport Department has stated that vehicles who have not got valid insurance even after being issued challans for not one will be seized, and their registration certificates (RCs) could be cancelled. Moreover, the authorities have also ordered these vehicles will not receive petrol and diesel at petrol pumps.

According to official information, a total of 1,01,41,951 vehicles are currently registered in the state, out of which only 35,68,318 ones have valid insurance. Meanwhile, as many as 65,73,633 vehicles in Odisha do not have valid insurance.

This large number has prompted authorities to strengthen enforcement and ensure that vehicle owners maintain valid insurance and other mandatory documents.

As per the Supreme Court’s directives, the departmental officers have been directed to take strict action against violators to ensure full implementation of the Motor Vehicle Rules.

The Supreme Court had directed every state government to implement the Motor Vehicle Rules ans strict action against violators. After the Supreme Court’s order, Odisha Commerce and Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena has ordered strict action against violators and the seizure of such vehicles in the state.

As per official sources, the department will intensify checks at toll gates using the e-Detection system. Through e-detection, the important documents like valid insurance, fitness certificates, pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate of vehicles will be verified electronically under the automated system at toll gates.

E-challans will be issued immediately against those vehicles that do not have valid documents and legal action will be taken against those who violate the traffic and vehicle regulations repeatedly, the department said.

In serious or repeated cases, the department will initiate steps to cancel the vehicle’s registration and can seize the vehicle.

The move is aimed at ensuring greater compliance with mandatory vehicle documentation and improving road safety across Odisha. The automated verification system is expected to make it easier for authorities to identify vehicles that are operating without the required certificates.
