Odisha to Host Artistic Gymnastics National Championships from April 25

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is set to host the Junior and Senior Artistic Gymnastics National Championships from April 25 to May 3, 2026, at the Gymnastics High Performance Centre in Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar, in what is expected to be a major push for the sport in the state.

The nine-day event will see participation from over 600 gymnasts representing 25 states, three Union Territories, and the Services Sports Promotion Board. The championships are being organised by the Odisha Gymnastics Association in collaboration with the Gymnastics Federation of India, with support from the Department of Sports and Youth Services, Government of Odisha.

Competitions will include team events, individual all-around contests, and apparatus finals across both junior and senior categories. The event will be conducted using FIG-approved equipment and supported by a technical panel of more than 300 officials, including judges, coaches, and support staff.

Several prominent Indian gymnasts, including Pranati Nayak, Asish Kumar, and Tapan Mohanty, are expected to participate, along with emerging talents from across the country.

However, the run-up to the event was not without controversy. During a press conference, Odisha Gymnastics Association secretary Ashok Sahoo faced tough questions from the media over the body’s lack of transparency. He was unable to provide details of the state squad, drawing criticism, especially after the Odisha AM/NS India Gymnastics High Performance Centre had already shared the list on social media a day earlier.

Officials from the Gymnastics Federation of India and the Department of Sports and Youth Services acknowledged the concerns and assured that steps would be taken to address governance issues within the state association.

Later in the day, the Odisha Gymnastics Association announced a 27-member squad, including 12 women. Reports indicate that around 12 of the selected gymnasts are from outside the state.

Speaking on the significance of the event, GFI Chief Operating Officer Kallol Mukherjee said performances at the championships will play a key role in selections for upcoming international competitions such as the Asian Championships, Asian Games, and the Commonwealth Games.

The press conference was also attended by DSYS Additional Secretary Bijay Kumar Swain, national coach Rakesh Patra, and other officials and representatives associated with gymnastics.

The championships are expected to draw national attention to Odisha’s sports infrastructure and provide a crucial platform for gymnasts aiming to make their mark at the international level.
