US Launches $1 Coin Featuring Trump’s Face

The $1 coin designed to celebrate America’s 250th birthday and seemingly President Donald Trump, whose face appears on one side of the gold-finish coin went on sale Wednesday, according to the U.S. Mint.
The coin features Trump’s portrait on the obverse and the Great Seal of the United States on the reverse. The design received approval this year from the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, whose members were appointed by Trump. In previous comments, the president said the idea of putting his face on a coin was “very unusual,” but added that he was “honored by it.”
Trump’s second term has seen several such branding efforts or attempts at them become embroiled in lawsuits. These include moves to put his name on the Kennedy Center and the U.S. Institute of Peace, as Trump seeks to leave his mark on history and Washington, D.C.
The coin has drawn criticism, particularly because federal law generally bars the depiction of a living president on U.S. currency. However, the Treasury Secretary has authority in certain circumstances to approve the minting and issuance of special coins.
The coins were struck to “honor 250 years of great American heritage,” the U.S. Mint said on its website. Above Trump’s portrait is the inscription “LIBERTY,” while below it are the years “1776–2026.”
The reverse features the Great Seal of the United States, with a bald eagle holding arrows in one claw and an olive branch in the other. A banner in its beak reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” Latin for “out of many, one.”
A roll of 25 coins costs $61, while a bag of 100 is priced at $154.50. The U.S. Mint has also randomly included some special-issue coins among the rolls and bags. These coins bear a “July 4th” mark, indicating they were struck on July 4, the anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
