Odisha CM Orders Salary Deductions for Unpaid Alimony

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has directed the state government to deduct court-ordered maintenance and alimony directly from the salaries of employees who fail to pay their wives or children.
The move follows complaints received during the Chief Minister’s grievance hearings, where several cases were reported of government employees allegedly ignoring court orders to provide financial support. According to the CMO, two or three such cases are being raised at almost every grievance hearing.

Under the new system, once a court order for maintenance or alimony is received, the concerned Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO) will deduct the specified amount from the employee’s monthly salary. The money will then be transferred directly to the bank account of the wife or eligible children.

Majhi said government employees cannot disregard judicial orders while withholding financial support from their dependents. He directed departments to ensure timely compliance with such orders.
The state government also plans to link these deductions with its Human Resources Management System (HRMS) to make the process more automated and ensure regular payments.
