PM Modi Pushes for Wider Use of Water-Saving Technologies, Global Best Practices

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for stronger efforts to tackle the growing water challenges arising from rapid urbanisation, population growth and rising future demand. He suggested that Urban Local Bodies should be sensitised to these issues and encouraged to organise similar deliberative sessions to develop practical solutions.

PM Modi made the remarks while chairing the valedictory session of the two-day National Departmental Summit on Water, organised by the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

The Prime Minister stressed the need for wider adoption of water-efficient technologies. He proposed dedicated exhibitions and workshops that expose Indian manufacturers and stakeholders to successful global practices, helping them develop and expand innovative water-saving solutions.

He also emphasised that the outcomes of the summit should not be limited to a one-time exercise. The actionable and time-bound recommendations should be regularly reviewed, monitored and improved through continuous follow-up.

Highlighting the importance of public participation, PM Modi called for promoting “Jal Utsav” to raise awareness about water conservation and encourage greater involvement of citizens.

He further recommended making de-silting a routine activity and developing clear guidelines and standard operating procedures for the work.

On dam safety, the Prime Minister stressed thorough preparedness ahead of every monsoon, strict compliance with safety measures and greater awareness among schoolchildren. He suggested incorporating dam safety and related topics into educational curricula where appropriate.

PM Modi also called for strengthening water-management expertise in universities and higher educational institutions. He proposed structured interstate study visits involving elected representatives, government officials and farmers so they can learn from successful water-management initiatives and replicate them in other regions.

The Prime Minister underlined the need for better water-data governance, with information from across the sector systematically collected, consolidated, analysed and put to effective use. He also recommended using artificial intelligence for data collection and analysis through a standardised format.

To tackle water scarcity, PM Modi advocated advance and integrated planning, including greater use of treated wastewater for agricultural and industrial needs.
