Odisha Flood Situation Worsens As Mahanadi, Baitarani Swell Amid Heavy Rain

Bhubaneswar: The flood situation in several parts of Odisha has become a cause for concern following persistent rainfall in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi river system.

The water level in the Hirakud reservoir has increased significantly due to continuous inflow from the upstream region. In response to the rising water level, authorities have opened four additional sluice gates of the dam. With this, water is currently being released through 12 gates.

Officials have advised residents living in low-lying areas along the downstream stretches of the Mahanadi to remain alert and closely monitor the situation.

Meanwhile, the Baitarani river has also started rising again following continued rainfall in its catchment areas. The water level at Akhuapada has been steadily increasing and has reached the warning mark, triggering concern among residents living close to the river.

People in vulnerable areas of Bhandari Pokhari and Dhamnagar blocks in Bhadrak district are particularly worried as rising water levels could lead to inundation of villages located along the riverbanks.

The swelling rivers have also raised concerns among farmers, who fear that standing crops and agricultural land could be affected if the water level continues to rise.

The district administration is closely monitoring the situation and has directed officials to remain prepared for any eventuality. Personnel from the Water Resources Department have inspected vulnerable stretches of river embankments to assess their condition.

Authorities have urged residents of low-lying areas to remain cautious and shift to safer locations if the situation demands. Relief and rescue teams have also been kept on standby to respond to any emergency.
