SC Seeks Delay in CBSE Three-Language Rule

The Supreme Court has asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to consider postponing the mandatory three-language requirement for Class 6 students until the 2027 academic session.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, said the delay could help students adjust more smoothly to the new system. The court also made it clear that students currently in Class 6 who want to take up three languages during the ongoing academic year should be permitted to do so.
The requirement is based on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Under the CBSE framework, students are required to study three languages, with at least two being Indian languages. Foreign languages may be offered only as a third or fourth language option.
