Odisha Cop Jumps Into Pond to Escape Vigilance Team, Arrested

An Odisha Police Sub-Inspector was arrested after allegedly accepting a ₹10,000 bribe and attempting to escape by jumping into a pond during a vigilance raid in Sambalpur district on Wednesday.

The accused, Sujit Kumar Mohanta, was posted at Mahulpali Police Station and allegedly demanded the money from a complainant in exchange for settling a miscellaneous case under investigation. After collecting the bribe at an isolated location near the police station, he spotted the vigilance team and tried to flee.

During the chase, Mohanta jumped into a nearby pond. However, a vigilance official also entered the water and swam after him, eventually helping the team catch him. The entire ₹10,000 bribe amount was recovered from his possession.

Subsequent searches at locations linked to the officer led to the recovery of an additional ₹1,55,700 in cash from an envelope kept in his police station rest room. Vigilance officials have also initiated a disproportionate assets investigation.
