Minister’s Nephew Held in Ganjam Student Suicide Case

Berhampur: Police have arrested the nephew of Odisha Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena in connection with the alleged suicide of a 20-year-old student at a private engineering college in Ganjam district.

The accused, Biswajit Jena, was taken into custody on Sunday after being named in a complaint related to the death of the student, who was pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) course at the institution.

The student was found hanging in her hostel room on Saturday. Following a complaint filed by her maternal uncle, Golanthara Police registered a case under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with abetment of suicide.

According to police, Biswajit Jena, aged 24, was reportedly in a relationship with the deceased and was also studying at the same college.

Berhampur Superintendent of Police Saravana Vivek M said an investigation was initiated immediately after the case was registered. Senior police officers visited the hostel, while a scientific team and an executive magistrate conducted an inspection of the scene.

The deceased had been sharing her hostel room with her sister and three other students. During the investigation, forensic experts collected digital and other material evidence. Electronic devices belonging to both the deceased and the accused have been seized and sent for detailed examination.

Police said the precise cause and circumstances of the student’s death will be determined after the post-mortem report is received. The investigation is ongoing, and further action will be taken based on the findings.
