Bhubaneswar Swelters Under Intense Heat and Humidity, Heat Index Touches 42°C

Bhubaneswar: Residents of Bhubaneswar woke up to another hot and humid morning on Friday as oppressive weather conditions continued to grip the Odisha capital. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city recorded a temperature of 30.6°C at 5:30 AM with relative humidity at 88%, pushing the heat index to a scorching 42°C.
The combination of high temperature and excessive humidity has made the weather feel far more uncomfortable, causing severe discomfort among residents.
Data from the past five days indicates that Bhubaneswar has been witnessing persistently high temperatures coupled with elevated humidity levels, with little relief even during nighttime hours. On May 22, the city recorded the highest heat index of 44°C when the temperature reached 31.4°C along with 84% humidity. Similarly, on May 21, the temperature stood at 29.6°C while humidity climbed to 90%, resulting in a heat index of 39°C.
The previous days also saw temperatures hovering close to 30°C with humidity levels ranging between 86.5% and 88%, keeping the atmosphere extremely sultry across the city.
Meteorologists said such hot and humid conditions are common during this period in Odisha, but the intensity witnessed this week has been particularly severe. Experts noted that high moisture levels in the atmosphere reduce the body’s ability to cool itself through sweat evaporation, increasing the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and other heat-related illnesses.
The IMD has warned that the prevailing weather conditions are likely to continue over the next few days. Meanwhile, iconic locations including the Lingaraj Temple were seen under clear skies and bright early morning sunshine, with no immediate signs of rainfall that could provide relief.
Authorities have advised people to remain hydrated, avoid prolonged outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours, and wear light and breathable clothing to cope with the heat.
