Supreme Court to Launch Monthly Lecture Series on Law, Justice and Legal Education: CJI Surya Kant

The Supreme Court is set to launch a monthly lecture series on law, justice and legal education to create a regular platform for discussing contemporary issues affecting the legal system and society.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant announced the initiative on Saturday on the occasion of Teachers’ Day. He said each month’s session would focus on a specific theme and aim to encourage deeper engagement with important legal and social questions.

Eminent Experts to Deliver Lectures
According to the CJI, every session will feature a lecture by a renowned legal expert, scholar, legal academic or specialist in the relevant field.
The lecture will be followed by an “Ideas Dialogue”, allowing selected young lawyers, law students and researchers to participate in discussions and raise questions.
Focus on Dialogue Between Experts and Young Legal Minds
The Supreme Court said the initiative is designed to go beyond the traditional lecture format and encourage meaningful interaction between established legal institutions and the younger generation of the legal community.
The series is also expected to create a lasting repository of contemporary legal thought and discussions.
The lectures are proposed to be professionally recorded, with edited transcripts and concise idea papers made available alongside them. The proceedings are also likely to be live-streamed, while summaries in Indian languages are proposed to help extend the initiative’s reach among legal and academic communities across the country.

Initiative Comes Amid Focus on Education Issues
The move comes as the Supreme Court continues to deal with important questions concerning legal and teacher education.
Earlier this week, the apex court upheld the regulatory authority of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) to require teacher education institutions to submit annual performance appraisal reports, underlining the importance of standards and accountability in teacher education.
Building a Lasting Institutional Tradition
Through the monthly lecture series, the Supreme Court aims to promote serious legal reflection, meaningful dialogue and wider participation on issues shaping the future of law and justice.
The initiative is also intended to establish a lasting institutional tradition of lectures, discussions and publications that can contribute to the evolution of legal thought in India.
