SC Gives Rajpal Yadav ‘Last Chance’ to Deposit ₹2 Crore in Cheque Bounce Case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday gave actor Rajpal Yadav a “last chance” to comply with its September 15 order to deposit ₹2 crore as part payment in a cheque bounce case, extending the deadline to Tuesday.
A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, said the amount must be deposited by Tuesday and posted the matter for hearing on October 7.
During the hearing, Yadav’s lawyer produced photocopies of four demand drafts of ₹50 lakh each, saying they had been issued in Maharashtra and were being brought to Delhi. The lender’s counsel, however, questioned their authenticity.
The court expressed displeasure over Yadav’s failure to comply with its earlier directions and said it had little faith in him, citing his past conduct. It also noted that he had not deposited his passport as directed.
Yadav had borrowed ₹5 crore in 2010 from M/s Murli Projects Ltd to produce Ata Pata Lapata, agreeing to repay ₹8 crore. Following defaults, he was convicted in the cheque bounce case and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment in May 2024.
The Delhi High Court later upheld the sentence after repeated opportunities to honour his repayment undertaking. The Supreme Court had subsequently extended his surrender deadline, which now stands extended until October 7.
