Birla Calls for Peace Through Parliamentary Cooperation at BRICS

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has called on parliaments to promote global peace, strengthen mutual trust and resolve international challenges through dialogue and cooperation. Addressing the inaugural session of the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi, he highlighted regional conflicts, wars, economic uncertainty, trade tensions, terrorism and climate change as major concerns requiring collective action.

Birla said BRICS cooperation must go beyond discussions and lead to practical policies that improve people’s lives. He stressed the importance of strengthening the voice of the Global South, respecting national sovereignty and involving young people in nation-building. He also described India’s democratic traditions of dialogue, diversity and mutual respect as key strengths.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the inaugural session at Samvidhan Sadan and interacted with leaders of visiting delegations. Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh said BRICS, representing nearly half of the world’s population, provides an important platform for global cooperation and reforms in international governance. He urged parliaments to remain responsive to challenges such as technological change, climate change, public health emergencies and social inequality.

Birla welcomed parliamentary delegations from 11 BRICS member countries and 10 partner countries. The two-day forum will conclude on Tuesday.
