Onion Buffer Stocks Released to Curb Seasonal Price Rise

The government has started a calibrated release of onion buffer stocks through the Kanda Express and road transport to ease seasonal price pressures and maintain adequate supplies in the market.

The Consumer Affairs Ministry said retail interventions have now been expanded to 19 cities, with more than 30 trucks deployed to improve availability. Two consignments have already been sent from Nashik. The first, carrying 450 metric tonnes, reached Delhi and was supplied to Varanasi, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Amritsar and the Delhi-NCR region. The second consignment, carrying 840 MT, reached Chennai and is expected to be distributed across Tamil Nadu.

Around 1,000 MT of onions are also being transported by road to major consumption centres based on market demand and prevailing prices.

The government said ₹210 crore has been paid directly to around 3,400 onion farmers, ensuring timely payments. Security measures have also been strengthened to prevent leakages during the transportation and distribution of large quantities.

According to the ministry, the release of buffer stocks has improved market availability and helped bring onion prices down. Further supplies are expected to support price stability.
