Odisha MVI Arrested for Possessing Disproportionate Assets

Bhubaneswar: In a major crackdown on corruption, Odisha Vigilance officials have arrested Golap Chandra Hansdah, a Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) posted in Boudh district, for allegedly possessing assets grossly disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The arrest followed extensive searches conducted at multiple locations linked to Hansdah. During the operation, Vigilance officials unearthed a staggering amount of unaccounted assets, including:

  • 1 multi-storeyed building
  • 44 plots of land
  • 1 kg of gold, including two gold biscuits (each weighing 50 grams)
  • Over 2 kg of silver
  • More than ₹2.38 lakh in cash
  • Bank and other deposits worth over ₹1.34 crore
  • ₹40 lakh spent on his daughter’s medical education
  • A personal diary detailing alleged benami transactions

According to officials, Hansdah was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source of these properties and financial holdings. The Odisha Vigilance has registered a case under Balasore Vigilance PS Case No. 7/2025, and the accused will be produced before the Special Vigilance Judge, Baripada.

“The evidence collected points to a significant accumulation of wealth beyond his lawful income. Further investigation is in progress to trace additional assets and identify possible accomplices,” a Vigilance official said.

This development is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to clamp down on corruption and ensure accountability in public service.
