Odisha Introduces Special Protocol for Managing Sickle Cell Disease in Pregnancy

Bhubaneswar: Odisha has introduced a state-specific protocol to improve the care of pregnant women affected by sickle cell disease and minimise risks to mothers and babies through early detection, regular monitoring and timely treatment.

The guidelines were jointly developed by experts from state medical colleges, the National Health Mission (NHM), the Directorate of Health Services and UNICEF Odisha. They were unveiled at a state-level review workshop in Bhubaneswar on Thursday, organised by NHM Odisha, the Directorate of Blood Safety and UNICEF.

The workshop focused on strengthening the Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Programme across 21 high-burden districts. Officials and health experts reviewed screening, treatment, patient follow-up and transport assistance, along with new initiatives planned for the current year.

Inaugurated by NHM Mission Director-in-Charge Harish Chandra Nayak and other senior health officials, the workshop also provided guidance on implementing the new protocol. Participants concluded by preparing a joint action plan to ensure consistent implementation across all concerned districts.
