Mizoram Tourism Surges as New Rail Link and State Campaigns Attract More Visitors

Mizoram is witnessing a strong growth in tourist arrivals, with the state recording 6,75,284 visitors between January and August this year, according to official data. The figure includes 6,64,197 domestic tourists and 11,087 foreign visitors.
The latest numbers reflect a significant rise in tourism activity in the northeastern state. Mizoram recorded 5,24,784 tourist arrivals, including 5,911 foreigners, during 2024-25. The number rose sharply to 9,80,618 in 2025-26.
Officials have attributed the increase to better infrastructure, improved connectivity and sustained efforts to showcase Mizoram as an eco-tourism and adventure destination. Festivals, cultural programmes and other tourism-focused initiatives have also helped draw visitors.

A major boost came from the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang railway line, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13 last year. The railway project connected Aizawl with the national rail network and has significantly improved accessibility to the state, officials said.
The Mizoram government has also introduced measures aimed at making tourism safer and more organised. These include the Mizoram Responsible Tourism Policy, 2020, along with the Mizoram (Registration of Tourist Trade) Act, 2020 and the corresponding rules.

Officials said the government is working with churches and civil society organisations to further promote tourism, strengthen visitor services and attract more travellers to Mizoram.
