Keonjhar Criminal Injured During Police Operation in Forest Area

Keonjhar: A late-night police operation in Keonjhar district turned dramatic after a wanted criminal was injured in an exchange of fire with police near Mahuladihia forest under Sadar police station limits.

Police identified the injured accused as Prabhat Mallick, a notorious offender who had been evading arrest for a considerable period. Sources said a police team had taken him to a forest area near Bauripada to recover money allegedly linked to a robbery case and gather further evidence.

During the operation, Mallick allegedly attempted to escape and reportedly attacked the police team with a firearm that he had concealed. The police responded to the threat, leading to an exchange of fire in which the accused sustained serious injuries.

Following the incident, he was rushed to Keonjhar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. His condition is being monitored by doctors.

Police officials said a country-made gun and cash amounting to Rs 12,000 were recovered from the accused during the operation.

Investigators revealed that Mallick has a long criminal record, with more than 40 cases registered against him at different police stations. He is believed to have been involved in several offences that had created fear among residents in parts of the district.

The police have launched a detailed probe and are examining possible links to other pending criminal cases.
