Is Dharmendra Pradhan Headed for Odisha? Political Buzz Grows Over CM Speculation

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s political circles are once again abuzz with speculation after social media platform Whispers in the Corridors claimed that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has been assured of the Chief Minister’s post in Odisha. While the claim remains unverified and there has been no official confirmation from the BJP or the central leadership, it has reignited discussions over the state’s political future.

The speculation comes at a politically sensitive time. Dharmendra Pradhan has recently found himself at the centre of national attention following widespread protests over alleged examination paper leaks and increasing demands from opposition parties and student groups for his resignation as Union Education Minister.

Why is the speculation significant?

Pradhan has long been regarded as one of the BJP’s tallest leaders from Odisha. Before the 2024 Assembly elections, his name had prominently figured among the frontrunners for the Chief Minister’s post. However, the BJP eventually chose Mohan Charan Majhi as Odisha’s first BJP Chief Minister.

Now, fresh political chatter has emerged after reports of Pradhan’s resignation from the Union Cabinet and discussions in Delhi’s political corridors. While these developments have fuelled rumours about a possible return to state politics, the BJP has not issued any statement indicating a leadership change in Odisha.

Internal equations under focus

Political observers believe any change in Odisha’s leadership would depend entirely on the BJP’s central leadership. The party has consistently maintained that organisational decisions are taken collectively, and there has been no indication that Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s leadership is under review.

Recent reports of internal disagreements within sections of the Odisha BJP have further intensified speculation, although these developments do not establish any direct link to a possible leadership transition.

Wait for official word

At present, the reports circulating on social media remain political speculation rather than established fact. Neither Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President J.P. Nadda nor the Odisha BJP leadership has announced any decision regarding a change in the state’s leadership.

Until an official statement is made, the claim that Dharmendra Pradhan has been assured of the Odisha Chief Minister’s post should be treated as unconfirmed political speculation.

For now, Odisha politics remains in a “wait and watch” mode, with every development in New Delhi likely to be closely watched for its impact on the state’s political landscape.
