India Sets 2029 Target to Become Drug-Free

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has unveiled a three-year action plan aimed at making India drug-free by 2029, stressing the need for a coordinated nationwide fight against narcotics.

Speaking to reporters in Goa during his three-day visit, Shah said the government has stepped up drug enforcement, intelligence-sharing, financial investigations and rehabilitation efforts since 2019.
According to Shah, authorities seized more than 1.19 crore kilograms of narcotics worth around ₹1.89 lakh crore between 2014 and 2024. During the same period, over 48.66 lakh kilograms of drugs were destroyed.
The new roadmap will focus on four key areas: intelligence-led enforcement, tighter control of precursor and synthetic drugs, reducing drug demand and related harm, and strengthening coordination and institutional capacity.

Over the next three years, the government aims to dismantle 100 international and inter-state drug networks, bring back 100 narcotics fugitives to India and destroy 100 illegal drug laboratories.
The campaign also aims to reach 50 crore people and train one lakh ‘Nasha Mukt Mitras’ to support the anti-drug movement. The number of de-addiction centres is planned to be increased to 1,751.
Shah noted that Goa already has an Anti-Narcotics Task Force and appealed to citizens and the media to actively support the nationwide campaign.
