Capital Hospital Doctor Arrested for Allegedly Accepting ₹30,000 Bribe

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance on Monday arrested an Assistant Surgeon of Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar for allegedly demanding and accepting a ₹30,000 bribe from an NGO representative in exchange for signing work certificates of employees engaged by the organisation.

The accused has been identified as Dr Satyajit Behera, Assistant Surgeon at Capital Hospital, according to Odisha Vigilance.

The NGO had been engaged by the hospital to provide assistance to unknown and destitute patients visiting the casualty department. According to the Vigilance, an NGO functionary had been approaching Behera since June to get the work certificates of its employees signed so their salaries for June and July 2026 could be released.

The doctor allegedly demanded ₹30,000 from the complainant for signing the certificates. Following the alleged demand, the NGO functionary approached Odisha Vigilance and lodged a complaint.

Based on the complaint, Vigilance officials laid a trap on Monday and allegedly caught Behera while accepting the ₹30,000 from the complainant. The officials recovered and seized the alleged bribe money from his possession.

After the arrest, Vigilance teams also conducted simultaneous searches at three locations linked to the accused as part of an investigation into suspected possession of assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.

A case has been registered at Bhubaneswar Vigilance Police Station under Case No. 19 dated August 16, 2026, invoking Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.
