BRICS Calls for Restraint, Civilian Protection in West Asia

BRICS member countries have called for an immediate reduction in tensions across West Asia, urging all parties to exercise restraint and avoid steps that could worsen the ongoing crisis.
The appeal was made in a joint declaration adopted unanimously at the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi. The participating nations stressed the need to safeguard civilians and civilian infrastructure while respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in line with the United Nations Charter.
The declaration highlighted dialogue and diplomacy as essential tools for achieving lasting peace, security and stability in the region. Member nations also underscored the importance of keeping international trade, supply chains and energy supplies uninterrupted. They opposed unilateral economic sanctions and other coercive measures that violate international law, warning of their far-reaching consequences.
The forum also called for reforms in global governance to make international institutions more democratic, fair, inclusive and accountable. It recognised the growing role of emerging economies and developing nations, particularly the Global South, in shaping international policies and promoting development through cooperation and capacity-building.
On terrorism, BRICS nations reiterated their unequivocal opposition to all forms of terrorist activity, irrespective of motive or origin. They strongly condemned the April 22, 2025, terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed 26 lives and left several others injured. The declaration called for coordinated action against cross-border terrorism, terrorist financing and safe havens, stressing that those responsible must face justice. It also rejected double standards in the global fight against terrorism.

Climate change was another key concern, with member countries urging stronger international cooperation to implement national climate commitments, improve mitigation and adaptation measures, and ensure a just transition.
The two-day parliamentary forum was attended by representatives from Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Held under the theme “Fostering Parliaments for People-Centric Development,” the meeting concluded with participating nations appreciating India’s successful organisation of the event and thanking the country’s Parliament and people for their hospitality.
