National Sports Day 2026: PM Modi Pays Tribute to Major Dhyan Chand

New Delhi: National Sports Day is being observed across India today to mark the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the sporting icon, saying his contribution to Indian hockey continues to inspire generations.

This year’s three-day campaign is being held under the theme “Ek Ghanta Khel Ke Maidan Mein”, encouraging people to include sports and physical activity in their daily lives.
Union Ministers Mansukh Mandaviya and Arjun Ram Meghwal also joined a cricket match in Delhi and urged citizens to stay active and fit.

India’s sporting ecosystem has expanded significantly in recent years, with the sports budget rising to over ₹4,400 crore in 2026-27. India has also improved its performance at the Olympics, Paralympics and Asian Games, supported by initiatives such as Khelo India and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS).
