SC Forms 5-Member Panel to Probe Student Protest Violence

The Supreme Court has constituted a five-member high-powered inquiry committee to investigate the violence reported during the student protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and other parts of the country.

The committee will be headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice R. Subhash Reddy. Its other members include former Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha, former Delhi High Court judge Justice Shalinder Kaur, former CBI Director Rishi Kumar Shukla, and former Meghalaya DGP L.R. Bishnoi.

According to a LiveLaw report, the panel will examine the violence that occurred during the ‘Parliament Chalo’ march on July 20 and look into all allegations related to the incident.
The Supreme Court has directed the committee to investigate both allegations of police brutality and violence allegedly committed by protesters. The court said the panel was being formed in the interest of justice after considering the facts and various suggestions placed before it.
