Actor Imran Khan Asked to Leave India by October 28 After Joining Mumbai Protest

Mumbai: Bollywood actor Imran Khan, nephew of actor Aamir Khan, has been directed to leave India by October 28 following his participation in a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Mumbai, police officials said on Thursday.

The Mumbai Police issued a notice to the actor under relevant provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, alleging a violation of rules applicable to foreign nationals participating in political activities. Khan is an American citizen and holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, according to media reports.

The development follows a protest held at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on October 10, where demonstrators demanded the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar. Khan was briefly detained by police during the demonstration.

Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya had lodged a complaint seeking action against the actor over his participation in the protest. The complaint was subsequently referred to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), which issued the notice directing him to leave the country.

The notice has brought the immigration rules governing foreign nationals and OCI cardholders into focus. Although OCI status provides certain privileges, it does not confer Indian citizenship or the political rights reserved for Indian citizens.

The specific legal grounds cited in the notice have not been fully detailed in the available reports. The actor’s response to the directive was not immediately available.
