Hirakud Dam releases floodwater through 10 gates as inflow continues to rise

Sambalpur: The Hirakud dam authorities on Wednesday opened 10 gates to discharge excess flood water from the reservoir, following incessant rains in the upper catchment areas.

According to reports, as of 6 am today, the water level in Hirakud Dam stood at 613.39 feet. The inflow into the reservoir was recorded at 2,10,204 cusecs per second, while the outflow through the 10 gates was 1,86,133 cusecs per second.

As the flood water is being discharged from Hirakud, the water levels of the Mahanadi and its tributaries are likely to rise. In view of this, the district administrations of the downstream areas have been asked to remain alert.

The officials are closely monitoring the situation as rainfall continues in the upper catchment areas of the Mahanadi basin.
