Elderly Woman Dies by Suicide in Ganjam; Family Blames Delay in Pension Payments

Berhampur: An elderly woman from Chhadeyapada village under Beguniapada block in Odisha’s Ganjam district allegedly ended her life after facing financial difficulties linked to the non-receipt of her government pension for the past three months.

The deceased, identified as Savitri Dora, was reportedly relying on the pension as her primary source of income for meeting daily household expenses. Family members claimed that the prolonged delay in the disbursement of the pension left her struggling to manage basic necessities and caused significant emotional distress.

According to relatives, Savitri had repeatedly voiced her concerns over the pending pension payments and was worried about her deteriorating financial condition. Unable to cope with the mounting stress, she allegedly consumed pesticide at her residence.

The incident has sparked concern among local residents, who have called for a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death. While the family believes the delay in pension payments played a major role in the tragedy, villagers have urged authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to determine whether any additional factors contributed to the incident.

Officials are yet to issue a detailed statement on the matter.
