Sabitri Brata 2026

Sabitri Brata, one of Odisha’s most cherished festivals, is observed today on May 16, 2026, coinciding with Jyestha Amavasya.

Married women across the state perform the sacred fast, praying for the long life, prosperity, and protection of their husbands. The festival draws its essence from the timeless legend of Sabitri and Satyavan. Sabitri’s courage and wisdom compelled Yamraj, the god of death, to restore her husband’s life. This story symbolises devotion, feminine strength, and the triumph of faith over destiny.

Women begin the day with ritual baths, new sarees, alta, and sindoor. They worship the grinding stone, known as Sila Pua, symbolising Goddess Sabitri. Offerings include rice, pulses, and seasonal fruits such as mango, jackfruit, banana, and pomegranate. Many women present 7, 9, 11, or 21 varieties of fruits during the puja.

The fast is observed from sunrise to sunset, either nirjala (without water) or phalahari (fruit-based). Women recite or listen to the Sabitri Brata Katha, reinforcing the cultural and spiritual depth of the ritual. Families often support the observance, with parents or brothers contributing to puja expenses.

Sabitri Brata holds unique importance in Odisha, blending Puranic tradition with local customs. Markets bustle with Sabitri bazaars, temples host gatherings, and households resonate with prayers. For Odia women, the day embodies devotion, love, and cultural identity.
