Puri-Konark Rail Line Fast-Tracked: Indian Railways To Transform Coastal Odisha Connectivity

Indian Railways has accelerated the much-awaited Puri-Konark rail line project, a major infrastructure initiative expected to strengthen connectivity across coastal Odisha and boost pilgrimage tourism in the region.

The proposed rail corridor will become a key part of Odisha’s planned coastal rail triangle linking BhubaneswarPuri and Konark.

Indian Railways Speeds Up 32-Km Puri-Konark Rail Project

According to officials from East Coast Railway, the 32-kilometre greenfield rail line aims to improve transportation between two of Odisha’s biggest spiritual and tourism destinations — the Jagannath Temple and the Konark Sun Temple.

At present, although Puri and Konark are located only around 35 kilometres apart along the Bay of Bengal coastline, there is no direct railway connection between them.

Railway officials said the project is expected to significantly improve travel convenience for millions of pilgrims and tourists visiting the region every year.

Project Declared Special Railway Initiative

The Railway Board sanctioned the project on February 19, 2024, and later declared it a Special Railway Project in March 2024 to accelerate implementation.

The Ministry of Railways has allocated ₹138.38 crore for the 2026–27 financial year to maintain momentum in land acquisition and construction work.

Land Acquisition Underway Across 36 Villages

Officials confirmed that approximately 521.48 acres of land will be acquired for the project, including:

  • 438.81 acres of private land across 36 villages
  • 82.67 acres of government land across 33 villages

The alignment passes through Puri and Gop tehsils. Notifications under Section 20A of the Railway (Amendment) Act, 2008, have already been issued to begin formal land acquisition proceedings.

Railway authorities also clarified that no forest land will be affected by the project, addressing concerns over ecological impact in the environmentally sensitive coastal region.

Coastal Villages Expected To Benefit Economically

Apart from improving tourism and pilgrimage travel, the rail line is expected to drive economic growth in several coastal villages located along the route.

Officials believe the project could encourage development of tourism infrastructure, local businesses, hospitality services and employment opportunities in areas that have seen limited economic activity so far.

The rail corridor is also expected to strengthen regional transportation and improve overall connectivity across coastal Odisha.
