Nationwide Strike on February 12 Likely to Disrupt Normal Life Across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Normal life across Odisha is expected to be affected on Thursday as several central trade unions have called a nationwide strike on February 12, raising protest against the Union Government’s policies and legislation.
The unions have announced a Bharat Bandh to oppose what they describe as “anti-people” legislative and policy measures by the Centre. Key among their demands is resistance to the proposed replacement of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the repeal of the four labour codes enacted by the Union Government, which the unions term as “anti-labour”.

The Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee has extended its support to the nationwide strike. With backing from a major political party, authorities are anticipating disruptions in several parts of the state.
Traffic movement could be affected if protesters block roads at key junctions and national highways. Commuters may face inconvenience, particularly during peak hours in major cities including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and other district headquarters.
There is also a possibility of disruption to train services if agitators resort to rail roko (rail blockade) agitations. Public transport services such as buses and commercial vehicles may remain off the roads in certain areas due to safety concerns.
In addition, educational institutions, markets and business establishments may witness closures depending on the intensity of the protests.
However, officials have clarified that emergency services, including ambulance operations, will be exempt from the effects of the bandh and will continue to operate to ensure public safety.
