PM Modi Engages Indian Community in South Africa Ahead of G20 Summit

New Delhi/Johannesburg: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to Johannesburg for the G20 Leaders’ Summit, held an important interaction with heads of prominent Indian community organisations in South Africa. The meeting focused on cultural ties, diaspora engagement, and strengthening people-to-people connections between the two countries.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said that the community members shared their experiences and appreciated India’s progress across various fields. He urged them to continue strengthening cultural linkages and to promote Indian traditions such as Yoga and Ayurveda among South Africans. PM Modi also encouraged greater participation in the Bharat Ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz to deepen diaspora engagement.

Community leaders expressed admiration for the Prime Minister’s vision and leadership. Swami Acharya described the interaction as “invigorating” and inspiring. Swami Abhedananda of Chinmaya Mission South Africa said it was a meaningful and enjoyable conversation where he could speak openly with the Prime Minister.

A community representative highlighted key issues discussed during the meeting. PM Modi emphasised the importance of promoting Indian vernacular languages, boosting tourism to India through community initiatives, and encouraging families who have lived in South Africa for several generations to preserve and promote Indian culture.

In a special gesture, the Chinmaya Mission presented a Kalash to the Prime Minister. The Kalash contained millets from India and South Africa, symbolising cultural harmony. PM Modi later shared that the Kalash will be placed at the Annapoorna Devi Temple in Durban.

The Prime Minister also met winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye Quiz, an initiative designed to help diaspora youth learn more about India’s heritage, history, and culture. He said the quiz plays a significant role in strengthening India’s bond with its global diaspora.

PM Modi’s engagements in Johannesburg underline India’s deep cultural and emotional ties with the Indian community in South Africa. The G20 Leaders’ Summit will be held on November 22–23, during which the Prime Minister is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings with world leaders.
