30-foot breach in Kani River embankment as Baitarani floodwaters hit Jajpur

Jajpur: Floodwaters first hit the Baitarani river following heavy rainfall, with a breach developing on the embankment of Kani, a distributary of the Baitarani in Odisha’s Jajpur district.
As per reports, about 30-foot long breach has been created on the right side of the embankment near Kantapada of Dasrathpur block.
The breach is situated near agricultural lands and a torrent of flood water is rushing into the farm lands spread over large areas.
Farmers of Malikapur, Duduraanta, Shushua, Mangalpur, Kanikapada and some other gram panchayats were left with no option other than to watch helplessly as their farm fields got submerged under flood water.
Some low-lying houses also went under the waters, creating panic among locals.
The Baitarani river is flowing above the danger level in Dasrathpur.
Against a danger level of 9.50 metres, water level of the river stood at 9.90 metres.
But the river is below danger level at Ballabhighat where danger mark is 13.45 meters while water level stood at 11.70 metres.
In Akhuapada the river is still above danger level though it is at a safe level than the one at Dasrathpur.
Water level at the spot is flowing at 17.62 meters, with danger level standing at 18.33 meters.
