Crocodile Nest Census Concludes in Bhitarkanika

Rajnagar: The annual crocodile nesting census in Odisha’s  Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara district has concluded successfully, with officials recording 117 crocodile nests this year.

According to forest department data, the highest number of nests were found in the Kanika Range with 106 nests. Apart from that 10 nests were spotted in Rajnagar Range and 1 nest in Mahakalapada Range.

Bhitarkanika is globally known as a key habitat for saltwater crocodiles, locally called baula kumbhira. During the breeding season, female crocodiles build nests on elevated ground safe from tidal waves, using hental and kharakhari leaves. The mother guards the nest until the eggs hatch.

Every year, the nest census is conducted to assess the breeding status of crocodiles and the progress of conservation efforts in the park.

To ensure protection, the Forest Department has put in place special surveillance for the nests. Restrictions on tourist movement have also been imposed in sensitive breeding zones during the season.
