Tiruvallur Ammonia Gas Leak: Death toll of Odia Workers rises to 6

Bhubaneswar: In the Tiruvallur ammonia gas leak tragedy, the death toll of Odia workers climbed to six on Tuesday. He succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

The deceased has been identified as Jamuni Juang, a resident of Keonjhar district.

All six deceased workers hailed from Keonjhar district and were employed at the seafood export unit in Tamil Nadu.

A heavy pall of gloom have descended the entire village and the family is under profound grief.

On the other hand, four other Odia workers are still battling for their lives and remain in critical condition in different hospitals in Tamil Nadu.

The ammonia gas leak occurred around 11 am on Sunday at ST Peter and Paul seafood export unit in Tiruvallur district spreading to the workers’ accommodation causing them breathing difficulties and discomfort.

The Periyapalayam police have filed a case under sections 105 (culpable homicide) and 125 (a) (endangering human life or safety) of the BNS.

Two brothers who own the firm, Mohan and Joseph, have been taken into custody for inquiry, police sources said.

Meanwhile, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday expressed profound grief over the death of Odia workers in the ammonia gas leak that occurred in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur and have announced an ex-gratia assistance of Rs 4 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) to the next of kin of every deceased worker.
