Over 100 Fishermen Stranded in Chilika Lake Amid Diesel Shortage

A severe diesel shortage left dozens of fishing boats stranded in Chilika Lake, forcing more than 100 fishermen to take shelter on small islands inside the lagoon.
Reports confirmed that nearly 40 boats from the Kanasa region remain stuck in mid-lake, unable to return home.
The crisis unfolded when boats ran out of fuel during fishing operations. Fishermen, unable to navigate back, anchored their vessels near small islands and sought temporary refuge. Families of the stranded fishermen expressed concern as the situation prolonged.
Local sources said several boats also remain stuck near the Daya river mouth, about eight kilometres from Jagulaipada in Kanasa. The shortage has disrupted fishing activities and created panic among communities dependent on Chilika for livelihood.
Fishermen urged authorities to intervene and ensure fuel supply to prevent further distress.
