Odisha Police, STA Train Personnel in Scientific Road Crash Investigation

Cuttack: Odisha Police, in collaboration with the State Transport Authority (STA), conducted a specialised one-day training programme on road safety and scientific crash investigation for police personnel and other stakeholders in Cuttack on Tuesday.

The programme was organised at the office of the Inspector General of Police, Central Range, under the guidance of IGP Dr Satyajit Naik. Technical specialists from IIT Madras, who serve as consultants to the STA, conducted the training sessions.

The programme aimed to strengthen the scientific and evidence-based approach to investigating road crashes. Participants were trained in examining accident scenes, identifying contributing factors, collecting and preserving evidence, reconstructing crashes and analysing the circumstances leading to accidents.

The sessions also focused on preparing detailed investigation reports and using findings from crash investigations to develop preventive measures that can help reduce the recurrence of similar accidents.

Addressing the participants, Dr Naik said every road crash can reveal shortcomings that need to be addressed. He stressed that scientific investigation can help authorities identify such gaps and implement appropriate corrective measures.

He also called for stronger coordination among police, transport authorities, road-owning agencies and technical experts so that investigation findings can be converted into practical road safety measures.

A key focus of the programme was the use of reliable accident data and technology for improving road safety management. The STA has been promoting a data-driven approach through initiatives aimed at strengthening road safety data collection and management, including the development of a Road Safety Dashboard.

Experts explained that combining scientific crash investigation with accurate data can help authorities identify accident patterns, vulnerable stretches and recurring causes, allowing targeted interventions.

The IIT Madras experts also highlighted that crash investigations should go beyond determining the immediate cause of an accident. Investigators were advised to examine factors such as road engineering defects, vehicle conditions, human behaviour and other circumstances that may have contributed to crashes.

Transport Commissioner-cum-Chairman, STA, Odisha, Amitabh Thakur attended the valedictory ceremony as the chief guest. He emphasised the role of scientific investigation, technology and coordinated action in improving road safety across the state.

Thakur urged the participating officers to implement the knowledge acquired during the training in their field-level duties and contribute towards building a stronger road safety framework.

Certificates were presented to the participating officers at the conclusion of the programme.

The initiative is part of the ongoing efforts of Odisha Police and the STA to promote technology-driven, scientific and evidence-based road safety practices, with greater focus on accident prevention, data analysis, effective investigation and inter-agency coordination.
