Odisha Picks 12 Sites for Adventure Tourism

The Odisha Forest Department has selected 12 locations to develop eco-friendly adventure tourism, aiming to attract more visitors while creating sustainable employment opportunities for local communities.

The first phase will cover popular natural destinations, including Similipal, Satkosia, Mahendragiri, Jiranga, Deomali, Barbara, Hirakud, Bichitrapur-Kuldiha, Gandhamardan, Karlapat and Chandaka.

According to Deputy Conservator of Forests (Ecotourism) Vivek Kumar, the department plans to introduce adventure activities with minimal environmental impact. Proposed attractions include zip-lining, Burma bridges, commando nets, mountain biking, archery, kayaking, canoeing, boating, river crossing and rock climbing. Facilities such as camping areas, nature trails, scenic viewpoints and dedicated adventure zones for children are also planned.

Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary has already introduced activities such as wall climbing, canopy walks and rowing. Similar facilities will be developed at other selected destinations in the coming phases.

The Odisha Ecotourism Society has begun the process of selecting a professional agency to implement the initiative. The agency will be responsible for setting up and operating the facilities in accordance with national and international safety standards.

Officials said the project will also focus on training local youth, nature guides and adventure instructors in coordination with local eco-development committees. The initiative is expected to strengthen nature-based tourism in Odisha while supporting livelihoods and protecting the state’s natural environment.
