North Bihar Floods Worsen as Gandak Swells

Continuous rainfall in Nepal and Bihar has intensified the flood situation across North Bihar, with the Gandak River reaching record levels and affecting more than 200 villages.
West Champaran, East Champaran and Gopalganj are among the worst-hit districts, while floodwaters have also spread to Muzaffarpur, Vaishali and Saran. Several embankments have been breached due to the strong river current.

In West Champaran, the Champaran embankment suffered breaches at four locations, while the Gandak reached a record 91.25 metres at Bagaha. The ring embankment in Areraj, East Champaran, and the Zamindari embankment at Sheetalpur-Banjariya in Gopalganj were also damaged, inundating nearby villages.
The Water Resources Department has deployed engineering teams to Bagaha, Bettiah, Motihari and Gopalganj for flood-control measures. Rising water levels in the Bagmati and Kosi rivers have also affected parts of Darbhanga, Samastipur, Supaul and Saharsa.

Relief and rescue operations are underway. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary conducted an aerial survey of West Champaran and instructed officials to remain on high alert and ensure timely rescue, relief and essential services in affected areas.
