Hirakud dam opens four more sluice gates to release flood water

Sambalpur: The Hirakud Dam authorities have opened four more sluice gates of the reservoir to release the excess floodwaters of the season into the Mahanadi River, infromed Chief Engineer Pratap Choudhury. According to sources, the operation involved three gates on the left spillway and one on the right.
The authorities have decided to release the flood waters to safely manage rising water levels in the reservoir. The water level in the reservoir increased following heavy rain near the upper catchment areas of the dam.
The gates were opened aroudn 9.30 am on Sunday morning.
Earlier, the dam opened three gates on the left side and one on the right side to discharge the season’s first floodwaters on July 9. Then the more gates were opened, taking the mubers to 10 on July 10.
The dam authorities have also advised people not to enter the river at this time. The dam authorities have also advised people not to enter the Mahanadi river during the release of floodwater due to the sudden increase in the river’s flow.
