Farmer Dies By Suicide In Ganjam Allegedly Over Crop Losses, BJD Seeks Compensation

Ganjam: A fresh allegation of farmer suicide has emerged from Odisha’s Ganjam district, where a farmer allegedly died by suicide after suffering crop losses and financial distress. The deceased, identified as Bulu Mallik, was a resident of S. Nuagaon under Kabisuryanagar police station limits.
According to his family members, Mallik had been under severe mental and financial stress after losing his crops due to recent natural calamities. They alleged that mounting financial difficulties following the crop damage drove him to take the extreme step.
Expressing grief over the incident, a delegation of senior Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders and women leaders visited the bereaved family at the MKCG Medical College and Hospital mortuary in Berhampur and extended their condolences.
The delegation included Berhampur Mayor Sanghamitra Dalai, former MLA Ramesh Chandra Chyaupatnaik and senior BJD leader Subash Maharana.
The BJD leaders blamed the state government’s handling of the farmers’ distress and demanded immediate financial assistance and compensation for the bereaved family.
The party also expressed concern over reports of successive farmer deaths in Ganjam following crop damage caused by the recent cyclone and incessant rainfall. It urged the state government to assess the losses and ensure timely compensation and financial support to affected farmers.
The allegations surrounding Mallik’s death have not been independently established.
