Deomali Security Tightened After Tourist Attack Concerns

Tourist safety at Odisha’s popular Deomali hill destination in Koraput is set to get a major boost, with the district administration planning tighter security measures ahead of the tourism season.
Deomali attracts visitors throughout the year for its scenic hills, lush greenery and panoramic views. Around six lakh tourists visited the destination between 2023 and 2025, underlining its growing popularity.
However, previous incidents involving attacks on tourists have raised safety concerns. As a precaution, the administration plans to prohibit trekking after 6 PM.

CCTV, Police Outpost Planned
Under the proposed security arrangements, CCTV cameras will be installed at key locations and police personnel will be deployed at strategic points. A new police outpost is also being considered at the forest beat house to enable a faster response during emergencies.

Tourists are expected to be permitted to visit Deomali from 5 AM to 5 PM and will have to leave the premises by 8 PM. Regular police patrols will also be carried out to keep a close watch on the area.
Officials have directed the police, security agencies and other departments concerned to coordinate closely to ensure the safety of visitors.
The new measures are expected to make Deomali safer for tourists, particularly during the peak tourism season. However, their success will depend on effective and consistent implementation on the ground.
