Cyclone Montha: Railways Cancel 61 Trains to Ensure Passenger Safety

Bhubaneswar: The Indian Railways has announced the cancellation of 61 trains in view of the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast on Cyclone Montha, which is expected to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast on Tuesday evening. The decision has been taken to ensure the safety of passengers and train operations amid adverse weather conditions.

According to the official notification, the cancellations are as follows:

  • 4 trains on October 27, 2025
  • 48 trains on October 28, 2025
  • 8 trains on October 29, 2025
  • 1 train on October 30, 2025

Key trains affected include:

  • 07166 Bhubaneswar–New Hyderabad Special on October 29, 2025
  • 17479 Puri–Tirupati Express on October 30, 2025
  • 18464 Bengaluru–Bhubaneswar Prashanti Express on October 29, 2025

In addition to the cancellations, nine trains have been short-terminated or short-originated, six trains have been diverted, and nine have been rescheduled.

Railway officials said they are closely monitoring the situation in coordination with the IMD and Disaster Management authorities. Field teams have been deployed for round-the-clock inspection of tracks, signaling systems, and overhead power lines to ensure swift restoration of services after the cyclone passes.

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, the Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘Montha’ over the west-central Bay of Bengal moved north-northwestwards at 12 kmph during the past six hours and was centered about 120 km south-southeast of Machilipatnam, 200 km south-southeast of Kakinada, 290 km south-southwest of Visakhapatnam, and 510 km south-southwest of Gopalpur.

The system is expected to cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Machilipatnam and Kalingapatnam, near Kakinada, during the evening or night of October 28, as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with maximum sustained wind speeds of 90–100 kmph, gusting up to 110 kmph, the IMD bulletin added.
