Baripada (Mayurbhanj): A man sustained critical injuries after suspected cattle smugglers allegedly opened fire during a late-night chase near Jugpura under Baisinga police limits in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, police said on Wednesday.
The injured has been identified as Ramesh Biswal alias Dipu, a resident of Jugpura village. He suffered bullet injuries to his abdomen and was immediately rushed to the Baisinga Community Health Centre for treatment.
According to reports, the incident occurred late on Tuesday night when a group of suspected cattle smugglers were transporting cows in two vans through an interior route near Jugpura, reportedly to evade detection on the main road. Soon after the incident, family members and locals rushed the injured to the nearest health facility.
On Wednesday morning, villagers discovered one of the vans burnt in a forested area near Machhapada and informed the police. A team from Baisinga police station reached the spot and has launched an investigation into the incident.
