Centre Allocates ₹1,718 Crore to Odisha Under SDRF for 2026-27
Bhubaneswar: The Centre has sanctioned ₹1,718 crore for Odisha under the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for the 2026-27 financial year to bolster the State’s disaster management capabilities and ensure prompt relief during natural calamities.
The information was shared in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday by Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in response to a question raised by BJD MP Manas Ranjan Mangaraj.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the total SDRF allocation includes ₹1,288.50 crore as the Central Government’s share, while the Odisha Government will contribute ₹429.50 crore.
The Ministry also informed that the Centre has already released the first instalment of ₹644.25 crore to the State.
Official data further revealed that Odisha had an opening SDRF balance of ₹8,219.04 crore as of April 2026, providing additional financial support for disaster preparedness and emergency response.
The Ministry reiterated that disaster management remains the primary responsibility of State Governments, which utilise SDRF resources to carry out rescue, relief and rehabilitation measures during emergencies such as floods, cyclones, droughts and earthquakes.
It added that the Central Government supplements these efforts by extending financial and logistical assistance whenever required. In the event of disasters categorised as being of a “severe nature,” additional support is provided through the National Disaster Response Fund (NDRF) after an assessment by an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT).
The SDRF serves as the primary funding mechanism for States to respond swiftly to natural disasters, with relief measures implemented according to norms approved by the Government of India.
Given Odisha’s recurring vulnerability to cyclones, floods and other extreme weather events, the latest allocation is expected to further strengthen the State’s disaster preparedness, improve emergency response systems and facilitate timely assistance to affected people.
