Bhubaneswar Sizzles at 42°C as Heatwave Tightens Grip Across Odisha

Bhubaneswar: The capital city continued to endure extreme heat on Thursday, with temperatures soaring to a blistering 42°C, making it one of the hottest days recorded this season. The sweltering conditions intensified by early afternoon, as the mercury had already hit 42°C by 1:30 PM, including in the airport area.

Residents across the city described the heat as unbearable, with many likening the experience to being “fried in a hot pan” under the relentless sun. Streets wore a deserted look during peak hours as people avoided stepping out unless absolutely necessary.

The situation remains equally grim across the state. On Wednesday, western Odisha witnessed the most severe conditions, with Jharsuguda recording a scorching 45.6°C — the highest temperature in the country that day. Bhubaneswar had also recorded a high of 41.2°C a day earlier.

While western Odisha has been battling intense heat for several days, the heatwave has now expanded its reach to coastal and southern regions, worsening the overall situation.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that there is no immediate relief from the prevailing heatwave, with high temperatures expected to persist until April 25. However, a marginal dip of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius is likely in several areas starting April 26.

The extreme weather conditions have significantly disrupted daily life, forcing people to stay indoors and limit outdoor activities, especially during the afternoon when the heat peaks. Authorities continue to advise caution and urge residents to take necessary measures to stay safe during the ongoing heatwave.
