Aman Sehrawat Wins Asian Games Gold in 57kg Wrestling

Indian wrestler Aman Sehrawat won the men’s 57kg freestyle gold at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, on Saturday, capping a determined comeback after past struggles with weight management.

The 23-year-old Haryana wrestler defeated North Korea’s Chong Song Han 11-7 in the final. Aman had earlier beaten him 12-2 at the World Olympic Games Qualifier.

Aman opened his campaign with a 20-9 technical superiority win over Japan’s Yamato Ogawa before defeating Kazakhstan’s Nurdanat Aitanov 12-1 in the quarterfinals.

He faced a tougher challenge in the semifinal against Tajikistan’s Aiaal Belolyubskii, trailing 2-6 after the first period. Aman rallied in the final period to win 14-8 and book his place in the final.

His gold comes after a difficult period in his career. At last year’s World Championships, Aman was found 1.7kg overweight before his opening bout and was subsequently banned by the Wrestling Federation of India. The ban was later revoked after he submitted a written apology.

He subsequently competed in the 61kg category at the Zagreb Open and Asian Championships, winning silver medals at both events, before returning to 57kg at the Budapest Ranking Series, where he won gold.

Aman also stayed back at the SAI centre in Lucknow to continue his preparations rather than travelling early to Nagoya, with coach Vinod Kumar citing difficulties in finding sparring partners at the athletes’ cruise-ship accommodation.

Deepak, Sagar Eye Bronze

Meanwhile, Deepak Punia and Sagar Jaglan remain in contention for bronze medals.

Deepak reached the 97kg bronze-medal bout after beating China’s Junpeng Zhou 12-1 and advancing through the semifinal round following his opponent’s forfeit. He then lost 8-9 to Uzbekistan’s Sherzod Poynov and will face Mongolia’s Gankhuyag Ganbaatar for bronze.

In the 74kg category, Sagar defeated Mongolia’s Tugla Tumur Ochir 8-0 before losing to Iran’s Yones Aliakbar Emamichoghaei. He bounced back by defeating reigning Olympic champion Razambek Jamalov of Uzbekistan 7-3 to enter the medal round, where he will face Kazakhstan’s Nurkozha Kaipanov.
