Floodwater Enters Maa Bhattarika Temple, Deity Shifted to Higher Ground

Bhubaneswar: Rising floodwaters of the Mahanadi River have reached the revered Maa Bhattarika Temple in Badamba of Cuttack district, forcing the temple authorities to relocate the movable idol of the presiding deity to a safer location.

The situation arose after incessant rainfall in the upper catchment regions and the continuous release of water from the Hirakud Dam led to a sharp increase in the river’s water level. The overflowing river submerged the temple’s sanctum, making it unsafe for regular worship.

In keeping with long-standing temple traditions, the servitors and temple management promptly shifted the movable idol of Maa Bhattarika to a temporary shrine on the nearby Ratnagiri hill, which serves as a safe refuge during floods. Daily rituals and religious ceremonies are continuing uninterrupted at the temporary location.

Meanwhile, the district administration has intensified safety measures around the temple premises as the river continues to swell. Officials are keeping a close watch on the flood situation and have urged devotees and tourists to avoid venturing near the riverbank until conditions improve.

Authorities have appealed to the public to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories as the flood threat persists in the region.
